The indigenous American architecture varies according to the whole region of North America, and it is affected by factors such as the climate, the type of community, the natural environment and so on. Some buildings are designed and built for specific functions, but other buildings such as Anasazi's big house are large and multipurpose buildings. The big house of Chaco Canyon is very well preserved, so I am familiar with the structure of Anasazi building for analysis.
At first, Anasazi lived in a cave. Then the Indians moved to a pit house or underground house. Anasazi began to build Pueblo, but eventually settled in the cliff house of Chaco Canyon. In Chaco, religion seems to be the central focus of Anasazi. Anasazi has kiva or religious room where men smoke or call ancient people. The Indians pray for good luck when they are hunting, raining, or harvesting. Corn is the most important crop of Anasazi. Because they believe that corn is milk from the mother earth's chest, the Indian life is centered around corn. Anasazi has a weather calendar that tells you when to harvest crops and grow them. Anasazi cultivates corn, roots, pumpkin, and beans. The Anasazi women put on their clothes. Anasazi is cotton woven into cotton and they weave clothes and baskets with Yucca's leaves again.
As Anasazi fosters more food, their society continues to evolve, and art and culture continue to prosper. A series of roads leads directly to the canyon, Chaco Canyon, which contains many large cliff houses in Anasazi. Most roads are about 30 feet wide and there are plenty of turquoise in the area, so it's most likely to be used to bring home roofs to trees and mine jewels. Anasazi disappeared, but their descendants are thought to have settled at the foot of Rio Grande Valley and Black Mesa.
There are 5,000 to 15,000 people in the Chaco Canyon at the peak of 1100. Anasazi's Pueblo Bonito has 650 to 800 rooms and hundreds of people. There are more than 1,000 inhabitants in the heyday. Built between 919 and 1085, it is "the largest apartment building in North America until the 19th century when New York City exceeded it". Chaco Canyon has a 400-mile road leading to other areas. By 1300 it was abandoned. Lesson 2: Cultural Field The purpose of this course is to make students recognize the very different cultures that exist in North America. They should also recognize that Native Americans are accustomed to encountering and trading with people different from their languages and cultures.
