With Mary Oliver's black walnut tree, the speaker faced a conflict between the literal meaning and the figurative meaning of the tree of her garden. At the beginning of the poem, mother and daughter "debate" selling trees to "repay mortgages". However, the transformation from literal languages to figurative languages is a symbolic representation of trees, which represents the tremendous work of the family's heritage and its ancestors.
