An Investigation of a Language Profile of a Mother-Tongue Mandarin-Speaking Graduate Student from English Major in Hong Kong

As mentioned earlier, students in Mainland China occupy the majority of non-local college students in Hong Kong, which may be inevitable in the coming years (Yeung, 2012). Nevertheless, the language profiles surrounding sociolinguistic problems, that is, "Who speaks what language, when, where, and why" (Fishman, 1972) uses Mandarin, which speaks its mother tongue in Hong Kong. In this research, we will investigate the language behavior of students whose mother tongue is Standard Mandarin. However, since the majority of the population accounts for more than 70%, most Chinese use Chinese dialects as the primary language.

Like my Hong Kong student, Rashiri lives in "language exiles" whose her mother tongue is marked as a non-citizen in her country (Bengali in the US, Cantonese in the People's Republic of China). My mother tongue is Mandarin. In other words, when I moved to Hong Kong to attend high school, I first encountered the language barrier. At first I could not understand anything. My school is really "local", so to speak frankly, I talked in Cantonese fluently, that I do not have friends for at least two years. My experience with three Italians has always reminded me of the Italians who remind me of my first few years in Hong Kong.
