The success of a law enforcement agency is to effectively travel around police officers and their communities. There are many ways an officer can perform a patrol, and some people are more common than others. Walking patrol, vehicle patrol, bicycle patrol, horse riding patrol, motorcycle patrol, air patrol are a number of ways to patrol the community. Walking patrol is the oldest form of patrol in history, as security guards walk around the area, interact with the community and learn about the daily work of the surrounding people.
There are basically three types of law enforcement agencies, municipalities, states, and federal. Local law enforcement agencies include police and security agencies. State agencies include state and road patrols. Federal agencies include the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Secret Service. Some agencies have mission to provide law enforcement functions, others have larger organization law enforcement agencies and departments.
In a forked system, an agency usually provides traffic restrictions and limited travel services, and another state agency investigates certain types of crimes. For example, Florida has Florida Highway Patrol and Florida Law Enforcement. California has California Highway Patrol and California Investigation Bureau. Practices vary widely from country to country, but state law enforcement agencies usually provide extensive police service in the rural areas of the state with a unified structure. Meanwhile, the sheriff's office usually fills the enforcement gap in rural areas of the state using a fork system.
