The Pacific War and Japanese occupation are traumatic times in the lives of the people of Malaysia and Singapore in the 1970s. This research traces the reasons why oral interviews of the Pacific War and Japanese occupations can tell stories of trauma without being overwhelmed by their memory. The traumatic experience of the Pacific War and the memories of the occupation of Malaysia and Singapore in Japan are emphasized that they are mediated and mitigated by a supportive social network as part of the interview community. Personal memory of the traumatic war of an individual is easier to remember, as it is located in the collective memory context of the group. However, individuals contradicting the collective memories of their own group recall that the trauma experience is more difficult and alienated, as they are not receiving support from the community.
