An Analysis of Policy Levers for Increasing Sustainability of the City of Ottawa’s Urban Transportation System

INTRODUCTION This city is representative of regional, national and international centers, representing people's rallies, healthy social vitality, and the symbol of wealth. They are economic, social and environmental metropolises, and are targets of smaller and hard-hitting cities. Nevertheless, most cities suffer from the unsustainability of cities, where automobiles are the center of transportation, traffic density is higher than buildings with higher traffic density, and the ownership of the car is the population of the city It is higher.

Due to the serious impact of transport services on urban energy consumption, development experts have been increasingly paying attention to sustainable transport in the past decade. Currently, the transportation system accounts for nearly a quarter of world energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Sustainable transportation has three widely recognized pillars to create a healthier and more productive city center to reduce the environmental impact of the metropolitan transportation.

With the theme of urban transportation, researchers have studied various types of transportation systems provided by cities. Its purpose is to encourage transportation in non-car mode and to provide cities with large capacity, convenient, clean, safe and efficient public transportation. In order to explain how Mexican cities improve sustainability performance, we compare the distribution of traffic patterns in some European cities. The direction of the proposed policy is to increase the number of trips by using non-electric mode transportation means and public transportation and to reduce the use of private cars 6.

Created by an environmentally friendly city plan, the concept of urban proximity is an important element of present and future sustainable transportation systems. For this reason, in order to shorten the required time and arrive at the destination, it is necessary to construct a city with an appropriate population and landmark density. This shortening of transportation time enables reduction of fuel consumption and opens doors to alternate vehicles such as cycling and walking.
