American Indian Health Care Coverage

In 1957, a report entitled "American Indian Health Service" was created and published. This was called a groundbreaking attempt to outline the challenges faced by the new Department of Health (IHS) in India. Today, IHS provides health care to 3 million Americans and about 5 million Alaska Native Americans (Wallechinksy). According to the Constitution, in order to be eligible for such health care, one must be a member of one of the tribes recognized by the Federation of 557.

The situation of American Indians and Alaska indigenous people is unique due to the existence of Indian Health Service (IHS), which manages its own hospitalized medical facilities and outpatient medical facilities. The coverage of insurance is a problem - 24% of American Indians do not have health insurance (Brown et al., 2000) - it does not consider taking health care like people in other groups. The three-part system of IHS, Tribal Run Clinic, Indian City Clinic represents a unique ecological environment where American Indians pursue physical, mental, alcoholic and drug problems. This is particularly important when discussing elderly American Indian health care issues, as the IHS system is focused on acute health problems rather than chronic health problems (Baldridge, 2001). IHS is legally a residual provider, but most of the IHS qualified population is dependent on it (Cunningham, 1996).
