The American Community Survey (ACS) is a nationwide survey aimed at allowing communities to review their changes. This is an important element of the census bureau's redesigned 10 year census plan. ACS collects and generates demographic and housing information annually rather than collecting it every ten years and issuing estimates for 1 year and 5 years. Although it can not easily be achieved by stratification of gender or ethnicity, many communities can access these same formats in the census or census area.
