Alvin Ailey Alvin Ailey was born in Rogers, Texas on January 5, 1931. His family is a very religious family. He joined the Sunday School and the Baptist Youth League church. Ten years after Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was founded in 1969, Ailey founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, later named Ailey School in 1999. The school currently trains more than 3,500 dancers every year. In 1970 the school moved to Manhattan and in 1984 Dennis Jefferson served as the director. Dennis Jefferson died in 2010, Tracy Inman and Melanie Par are co-directors. A few years later in 2012, many years of art director Sylvia Waters retired, deputy director Troy Powell took over the artistic director.
