Alternative Sentencing: Money Well Spent

Despite economic losses, Florida is losing war with drugs. The economic impact of drug abuse in Florida is estimated to be about 6% of the state's gross domestic product (Miami 20). One of the contributors is my short-sighted view of the court system. It has chosen to impose strict criminal penalties including imprisonment for non-violent criminals of minor offenses. In stark contrast to the rapid increase in drug abuse, increased budgetary constraints resulted in a decrease in available resources.

The alternative treatment of imprisonment saved money for Maryland. As recently concluded by the Maryland Criminal Judicial Decision Committee, Maryland has a choice of regulatory programs focused on "postpay" treatment (ie distribution after the working period) or "withdrawal". Examples include a community selection program (COP) that includes regulated criminal care centers, daytime reports, intensive surveillance and family detention, and gradual sanctions against program failures. Baltimore offers a front-end (ie, initial judgment) transfer program through its medication court. Looking at the whole plan, the judgment committee wrote as follows. "By using alternative sanctions in the state of Maryland, the annual cost of criminals has been reduced from $ 20,000 to $ 4,000."

Alternative decisions will help communities and criminals. Nationally, the criminal justice system is overloaded with drug-related incidents. Taxpayers pay millions of dollars to imprison criminals. In some cases imprisonment is necessary to ensure public safety, bringing nonviolent criminals to prison only sacrifices the community in the long term without having to deal with poisoning . Most importantly, drug rehabilitation will give you the opportunity to dig into the causes of poisoning, heal past wounds and repair broken relationships with partners, children, friends or employers. Drug rehabilitation has not erased the past, but it has laid the foundation for you to start again.

The basis of an alternative judgment plan is that re-accommodation in prison is more effective than new prisoners. Another ruling recognizes the fact that medicine could turn our best people into criminals and that each one of us should have the opportunity to recover from toxic diseases. For many criminals who have transitioned to these projects it is the first alternative judgment that they got the opportunity to undergo medical supervision. The Adult Drug Court Program, administered by the State of California San Diego County Government, is an example of an alternative judgment. Qualified offenders need to complete the mandatory treatment plan under the supervision of the drug court and competent care and treatment teams.
