In order to qualify for the Certified Medical Assistant exam it is necessary to complete an official medical assistance program from a school accredited by the Joint Health Education Program Certification Committee (CAAHEP) or the Health Education Certification Committee. If you pass the school (ABHES) exam, you will receive an official certificate certifying that you are an accredited medical assistant (CMA). This certification is valid for five years and after that it either passes the exam or needs to be recertified as a continuing education unit.

Look for schools that are accredited by the Health Education School Certification Authority or the Joint Health Education Program Certification Council, whether you are reviewing online or traditional programs. Many of these courses provide internship opportunities at clinics and hospitals as part of comprehensive training. Through clinical rotation, you can have field experience on site before entering the labor market.

In the United States, if the graduate program is accredited or registered, the organization's medical support program can be accredited by the relevant health education program certification committee (CAAHEP) or the health education school accreditation body (ABHES). Accreditation is required by the American Medical Assistant Association (AAMA), the American Health Engineer (AMT), and the National Health Professionals Association (NHA). There are currently over 600 CANAHEP certification programs, over 500 organizations, and over 200 ABHES certifications. CAAHEP, ABHES or other accredited association will require institutional Medicaid programs to meet specific educational standards and provide appropriate classrooms, lectures, and experimental time.
