Military prisoners of Alcatraz Island will build a new military prison from 1909 to 1911. The new cell has 600 cells, "... a hospital, cafeteria, other prison building" (history.com). A study on this issue shows that when a prison is built it is the world's largest reinforced building (NPS). The view of the Alcatraz Island lighthouse on the Golden Gate Bridge was blocked during the construction of the house, "the lighthouse is outdated" (history.com).
When Alcatraz became a prison, military prisoners and civilians were imprisoned on the island. There are many American Indians. In January 1895, the US government arrested 19 Mokihopi and transferred it to Alcatraz Island, the largest group declared imprisoned in Alcatraz. Between the rest of the 19th century and the early 20th century the Indians continued to be held at the disciplinary camp of the island. On this day the Indians came again to Alcatraz Island when Richard Oaks of the Mohawk Indians and a group of supporters of India symbolically claimed the Indian island with a charter ship Monte Cristo. On November 20, 1969, this symbolic occupation became a full-time occupation that lasted until 11th June 1971.
On August 22, 1934, a federal prison of Alcatraz island advertised by the media was established. However, Alcatraz has a long history until a prison is founded. Alcatraz Island is located in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, 1.6 km from the coast. You can see the area around the bay at 360 degrees. In the mid 1800's gold was discovered in California while it was called California Gold Rush, and people flocked to the world, desiring wealth. But they are worried that the newly discovered wealth will lead to an attack on San Francisco. Recognizing the strategic positioning of Alcatraz Island, the US government dominated the island. In 1854, the US government built the first lighthouse on the Pacific coast and built a well-equipped fort in 1859.
Alcatraz Island is located in the San Francisco Bay, about 25 miles from the coast, the oldest lighthouse on the west coast, a ruins of the former Alcatraz federal prison. The Alcatraz Federal Prison is famous for being the safest prison in the country. It houses some of the most serious criminals in the country, including Al Capone, George 'Machine Gun Kelly', and James 'Whitey' Bulger. Today, the island is now a recreational area of the people and is designated as a national historical monument.
