Aging the population of the world is a big issue for society and medical services. Because psychiatric disorders, especially dementia and depression are common in old age, mental health problems are very important. Psychiatric disorders can have serious consequences for the quality of people in their late years and have a major impact on the use of health and social services. In this paper, we discuss these issues from the viewpoint of elderly as consumers and discuss the role of health promotion, primary care, social welfare service, and professional mental health service for the elderly. People in a certain group, including women, people with ethnic background, very old people, learning disabled people, gay elderly people, face a special problem that was briefly explained. Although this article is mainly based on the UK, the mental health problem of the elderly is a huge worldwide public health problem.
