A good source is Freedman's savings trust company (For details, please see the African American Freedman Savings Trust Company's record page). The company was formed to help civil war African-American soldiers to release slaves. From March 3, 1865 to July 25, 1874, the depositor's name, date of entry, age, date of birth, place of residence, color, employer or employee, or the name of the depositor, in the signature card or register of Friedman's savings trust company Occupation is stated. Name of wife and husband, message of death, child's name, father and mother's name, brothers and sisters' names, comments and signatures. Early books sometimes included the name of the former owner or mistress and the name of the plantation. Copies of death certificates are sometimes attached to the entry. Collections are sorted alphabetically by state and then sorted by the city where the bank is located, then the date the account was created, and then the account number.

The United States Government established the Refugee Committee, Free People, Abandoned Land from 1865 to 1872 to support former slaves in the southern United States of America. The radio station created various records that are very important for genealogists. These documents include censuses, marital records, and medical records. These records usually include the full name, former owner and farm, and current residence. In 1865 and 1866 some of the land abandoned and forfeited contained names of abandoned, confiscated or leased plantations or homeowners. It provides county and location, house description, number of owned land, and number of old slave houses. These movies do not seem to contain the name of a previous slave.
