By smoking cigarettes smokers absorb 1 to 2 mg of nicotine per cigarette. Approximately 35 million users are trying to quit smoking each year, but it is estimated that less than 7% people quit smoking for over a year (NIDA 1998)
Smoking is very addictive. Nicotine is a medicine mainly used by people who smoke cigarette products including tobacco. The addiction of tobacco and other tobacco products caused by nicotine is similar to that of drugs such as heroin and cocaine (13). Nicotine is naturally contained in tobacco plants. But the tobacco company is deliberately designing cigarettes to get enough nicotine to build and maintain addiction. The amount of nicotine entering the body depends on how a person sucks the product and depending on nicotine content and product design. Nicotine is absorbed into the blood through the lining of the mouth and lungs and spreads to the brain in a matter of seconds. Drinking more frequent and deeper cigarette smoke will increase the amount of nicotine absorbed by the body.
