My research field is criminal justice. FBI is developing a new development in this field, and this new development is the next generation identification system (NGI) mentioned in this article. NGI will strengthen and / or replace IAFIS, which is the system my law enforcement agency is currently using. NGI is an advanced biometrics service. NGI is a $ 2 billion investment by the US federal government. It will take ten years for NGI to fully activate.
x 52.8 million dollars is used for investment funds with emphasis on expanding the alternative biometrics system of DHS. This project provides DHS with next generation biometric capture and recognition technologies such as irises and face recognition as well as fingerprints. Implementation of alternative systems provides additional identification options to help DHS institutions overcome field operational challenges when individuals can not provide sufficient fingerprints.
In 1892, the Vucetich system identified 101 different fingerprint patterns. Today, FBI's integrated automatic fingerprint identification system (IAFIS) is considered the world's largest biometric system. It collects fingerprints from more than 103 million domestic subjects and 73,000 known and suspected terrorists from all over the world. A very complex computer worm was discovered in June 2010, targeting five nuclear facilities in Iran. Stuxnet virus was designed to destroy uranium concentrated centrifuges at Iran 's facilities. The New York Times reported in June 2012 report that President Obama acknowledged the Stuxnet attack as a continuation of George W. Bush's strategy of weakening Iraq's nuclear development program. According to reports, the US and Israel have cooperated with this attack. According to Mikko Hypponen, principal researcher of computer security provider F - Secure, Stuxnet was discovered in 2010 after staying in Iran for 1 year.
At the federal level, the FBI Next Generation Identification Program provides new identity tools to federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, which stimulate critics who believe that this system is the only way to catalog people . - Guilty, innocent and in the middle. However, the plan seems to be the next logical step of the domestic process, and fingerprints and photographs do not always convey the whole story of those who committed the crime. In a larger plan, we extend the database service to state and local agencies involved, using more fingerprints, palm prints, facial and iris scans to identify interested people.
