Machiavelli wrote his analysis on how to acquire and maintain the power of the principality in the "Prince". Forming the basis of all his other theories is his ability to understand humanity and maintain domination over human beings. Machiavelli can recognize the need to balance what citizens need to do to prevent them from rebelling when they unite and to prevent others from forming an invasion. Thucydides has a similar view of humanity as he believes that everyone is driven by fear, honor, and self-interest.

Machiavelli has focused on the way the principal held power to investigate the politics of various city states. He began with a new principality that mastered his skills. He feels that it is difficult for people holding power through their skills to acquire their principality, but they can easily stick to it. The problem of getting authority is that many enemies are profiting from old leaders and new allies are not so strong until first seeing the benefits of new leaders.
