Accounting is the practice of "maintaining, auditing, and processing financial information ..." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accounting) for companies, individuals, or organizations. Some of the fundamental parts of accounting are "identification, measurement, and communication" (Black, 2000). Accounting is either a cash payment system (cash accounting) or an accrual basis (accounting accountability). Cash accounting records the inflow and outflow of cash at the time of occurrence. The accrual system records income and expenses belonging to that period, not cash payments. For example, checks prepared for a power company in March of April are displayed as expenses in April according to the accrual method and are displayed as cash in April cost.
