Absence from Class

If the student is absent or absent from the course, please contact the teacher as soon as possible for make-up work. Absence forms can be used to report absences to teachers.

If the student is absent for more than 5 consecutive days and is absent due to illness or other emergency situation, please contact UI Service Center (319) 384-4300 or registrar@uiowa.edu. If a student can not contact the service center, absence may be reported by someone else representing the student. The service center sends e-mail to the student's current teacher, consultant, and academic support / holding department. This includes absences. A copy of the email will also be sent to the students. Students are responsible for contacting the teacher as soon as possible for makeup.

The teacher provides students with written statements about absenteeism and the policy of participation in the class. Excessive or long term absences in the classroom is a good reason for teachers to exclude students from the course management. On accelerated courses and courses where admission is restricted, absence of first class may be regarded as absent. The day the administrator deletes the list posted on the UAccess Instructor Center's class list, the impact of that decrease on the student's academic performance will be determined. Students need to participate in all courses. In case of excessive absence, the coach may leave the student out of the classroom. "Excessive absence" is defined as absence for one week in fall semester or spring semester and overtime is assigned proportionally to the number of absenteeism. Part of your class participation in your grades is based on regular classwork and participation, regular homework and classroom personal and group assignments and announcements. Two absences are allowed during the semester, each absence will reduce your participation level by one character.
