Dallas Zoo began in 1888 with only two deer and two Mountain Lion at City Park. It moved to the Fair Park in 1909 and soon moved to Marsalis Park in 1912 and passed the second house. In the past 129 years, many upgrades have been made and the collection has been expanded. In 1955, the Dallas Zoological Society was established as a nonprofit organization supporting the zoo. In 2009, the public-private partnership changed the zoo to private management. Today, the Dallas Zoo keeps more than 2,000 species of animals and is prospering through new exhibits from Kimberly - Clark Corporation such as Santana Giants. Outpost of Simmons Hippo opened in the spring of 2017, and returned to the zoo for the first time in 15 years.

Savannah is the only multicultural zoo exhibition in the United States that combines elephants and other species in the same habitat. It was selected as the Top Ten Zoo exhibition by USA Today

This zoo established seven consecutive participation records in FY 2016 and over 1 million visitors accessed the largest and oldest zoo in Texas through the gate.
