2-step verification process helps protect you and makes it difficult for others to sign in to your Microsoft account. We use two different forms of identity, password and contact information (also called security information). Even if someone else finds your password, it will be invalidated if they can not access your security information. That's why it is important to use different passwords for all accounts.
You can set up 2-step verification using your email address, phone number, or Authenticator application. When you log in to a new device or a new location, you will receive a security code to enter on the login page. For more information on the Authenticator application, see Using the Microsoft Authenticator application.
If 2-step verification is enabled, two different identification methods are always required. In other words, if you forget your password, you need two contact methods. Or, if you lose your contact information, you can not return to your account by entering your password - it will take 30 days to recover access. You may not be able to access this account. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you store three security information in your account for the sake of emergency.
Under 2-Step Verification, select Enable 2-Step Verification Settings or select Disable 2 Step Verification to disable it.

Normal security codes can not be used for some applications (such as mail applications on some phones) or devices (such as Xbox 360). Even if a "password error" error is displayed on an application or device after turning on 2-step verification, if you are sure that the password is correct, you will need an app or device's app password.
Application passwords are only available if you are using 2-step verification. If 2-step verification is not enabled, the 'App password' section will not appear on the 'Additional security options' page.
If you forget your password after enabling 2-step verification for your account, you can reset your password if you have two IDs. Depending on the security information you add to your account, this requirement means entering a security code from the Authenticator application and entering a secure code to be emailed to the secondary email account.
To reset your password, follow the instructions in "How to reset your Microsoft account password". However, we do not provide secure code to verify your identity, but two are provided.
Obtaining Secure Code If you are looking for information on changing, deleting, or updating an alternate email address or phone number, follow the instructions in the security and security codes or replace the Microsoft account security information.
Two-step verification may be confused with two-factor authentication (2FA). There are generally two authentication methods for this. However, compared to the 2FA process, the method in two-step verification can belong to the same category of authentication factors, and the method used in 2FA is not necessarily sequential. Furthermore, authentication and authentication are not completely synonyms. Verification may be part of the real world process. For example, to present your driver's license as an identification card. Authentication is considered a conformance of the verification process designed to protect automated online systems
2-step verification: 2-step authentication protects accounts as well as passwords, and enhances security. This is how it works - after logging in, after entering the password, you are asked for another way to prove that it is really you. Accept the notification sent to the Microsoft authentication system or enter the verification code generated by the application. With this feature, someone trying to find your password will be invalid if you can not access your phone.
WhatsApp adds 2 step verification: WhatsApp introduces 2 step verification. This can be activated by accessing your mobile phone settings. Using the authentication itself, you can create your own 6-digit personal code to authenticate yourself (rather than sending a text message with Google verification code). (PC World)
