In his closet, Head nurse, Miss Van Kampen, found a lot of sky bottles. She believes that Frederick caused jaundice by alcoholism. By this affair he gave up a vacation to leave the army. Nick in "Big Double Heart River" is a hero of a codenamed name, isolating himself from a person and healing his body and spiritual wounds using nature. He realized that life is meaningless, he can still manage dealing with death and depression, and put pressure on this dark and lonely world. The function of these code heroes is reflected in Hemingway's own life. In a sense, each of these three hero's lives and stories is an autobiographical life of Hemingway's own life.
