One of the things that made me most moved was that the characters thought they had a good life. I saw the opposite. Success, success through career, education, goals, love, or at least we think like this. These gangs exist only in each other without gang support. And these boys / characters do not exist as individuals. They laughed at former gang member Tony and asked me to leave the gang to build a future for them.

Crea Vei Watkins was born in Death Valley in 1984 and grew up in a desert in Nevada. Her stories and essays are on a new story from Granta, Paris Review, One Story, Plowshare, Grimmer Train, Best of the West: Missouri. She received William Ralston Fellowship from the Sewanee Writers Conference and a presidential scholarship from Ohio State University where she won MFA. Claire graduated from Reno University in Nevada and is an associate professor of creative writing at Bucknell University. For many writers, short stories may be in the world of publication or expressed by literary representatives.
