A fairytale creation or the beginning of everything: Students’ pre-instructional conceptions about the Big Bang theory

At the beginning of the universe, Big Bang was an important subfield in cosmology, showing the beginning of space and time. Therefore, it forms the world view of modern science. Passing it to students through science education is a common requirement in the discussion of scientific literacy skills (eg, American Science Promotion Association, 1993, Schecher et al., 2004).

However, it is not clear in science education whether the Big Bang concept differs from country to country. of course. Our research investigates these concepts of students entering the classroom. We conducted a public survey in Germany and asked questions based on recent American studies. The result clearly shows that there is a broad misunderstanding that the Big Bang is an open space or an existing material explosion to the center of the universe because interpersonal reliability is very high. Furthermore, by comparing the results of researchers in the United States, Sweden and Germany, we can identify student differences in per-country perceptions. Our findings seem to indicate that German students have a slightly better preschool concept of Big Bang theory.
