A Critical Comparison of Gothic Architecture in Italy, France and Germany

In the late Renaissance, Gothic was first used as a word of contempt. Gothic is barbarian - this has led many theories, why "Goth" was chosen as a style title that requires extreme engineering as well as knowledge of technology and art? Since then, great effort has been made to rename the style with terms that better cover the Gothic style. The Gothic style is an exaggerated, wonderful attempt to approach God. Worshipers are not only fascinated by the altar but also experienced rising to heaven 1. These artistic jewels are important evidence of historical skills and imaginative craftsmanship and vision of skilled craftsmen.

Sources of influence of architecture: The new French Gothic architecture began with Romanesque architecture of the UK, Italy and Normandy. The origin of the Gothic style has a strong Norman influence on Jumiège, Evreux, Rezai Cathedral, which influenced several architects near Paris. By the end of the 11th century efforts have been made to raise the height of the Norman church of Caen, Bayeux, Jumeirah or Mont Saint Michel. By the beginning of the 12th century, Italian Rivolta d'Ada (1100), British Durham Cathedral (1093), Normandy Jumièges (about 1120-1125) developed ribbed vaulted ceilings and pointed arch prototypes did. Some scholars also suggest that a vaulted room with ribs will first appear in Milan's Sant'Ambrogio church (1060). As mentioned above, the rib vaultroom originated in Islam in Spain and may have appeared as early as the latter half of the 10th century (Bony 1983).

By the year 12 AD, people began building churches and castles based on Gothic architecture. They founded a church in Pisa in Florence and Italy. Even in France, the cathedrals of Run, Paris, Amiens, Reims, Chartres and Rouen were built in Gothic style. In the UK, Westminster Abbey is built in Gothic style. Immediately, the Gothic style was also tested in Milan Italy and Cologne, Bremen, Freiburg, Münster and Regensburg. Gothic architecture and Renaissance architecture are comprehensive expressions of their own era culture. Gothic architecture started in France in the 12th century and continued for the 4th century until the 16th century. After that, Renaissance architecture superseded Italian Florentine gothic architecture from the 15th century to the 17th century. The main reasons for the formation of these two polar coordinate styles, Gothic style and Renaissance style, are different backgrounds of the times, different cultural standards of social culture, religious beliefs, and origins. They represent their time and country, and they become specific languages. In this article, we compare the two most beautiful works of each era, Amiens Cathedral and Florence Cathedral, by comparing these two architectural styles through the historical evolution of European architecture.
