A Close Look to Mama Elena's Personality

Mama Elena, an opponent of Laura Esquivel's novel "Like Chocolate", is portrayed as an authoritarian woman throughout the novel. She is a widow, three daughters, Rosaura, Tita, and the mother of Gertrudis. Due to her character, all three people are afraid of Mamaelena. Characteristics of her mother Elena, intimidation, command and indifference, proves her character is authoritarian. Mama Elena features a blackmail, like the captain of the Mexican Revolution, that allows her to cause her neighboring girls, those working for her, and even the fears of those who encountered her.

Like most literary pairs, Tita and Mamaelena define their personal struggle and share a central characteristic that defines the conflict between them. The revelation of suffering due to the loss of love itself is complementary to the important theme that Titata has been deprived.
