Robert Lucas was born in Yakima, Washington State on September 15, 1937. He is the biggest child of his father, Robert Emerson Lucas and his mother, Jane Templeton Lucas. He is a sister named Jenepher born in 1939, brother named Peter born in 1940. His parents moved from Seattle to Yakima and opened a small ice cream shop called Lucas Ice Cream. The restaurant finally collapsed in 1938. The family returned to Seattle during the Second World War. His father found a job as a steam worker at a shipyard, and his mother was a fashion artist.
