Christine, I think that "transformation" is not what you mean. I am convinced that Nick has certified himself as a male and has never experienced hormones. I am convinced that Nick thought it was a man and he did not receive hormonal treatment in 1922! But - I think there is solid evidence that Nick has the tendency to be homosexual and most likely to fall in love with Gatsby
I have read this novel twice and have never thought about it before. But when I read it for the third time, I found a few clauses showing Nick's homosexuality. In other words - after intense night drinking, Nick will bring Mr. Maggie home and eventually lie down in his bed (p. 38). At the party, an attractive woman, Nick was tied up with Catherine, but he left her, totally followed a stranger McGee, and always went home! In another incident, Nick was on a train, and he imagined kissing a male conductor (p. 115). In another passage, Nick lamented the age of 30, and the list of his "single men" is gradually decreasing (p. 135). These incidents, coupled with Nick repeatedly refusing the offer of women, include Jordan Baker, home girls, and office romance. Nick and women have not grown and expressed no desire for them. Among such beautiful novels, the attractiveness of Nick to any woman will certainly be emphasized. But that is not the case. His charm with Gatsby has been told many times and is very detailed!
These clues are subtle and readers can easily give things. However, when you read it for the third time, you must explain that there is no doubt in its meaning.
This is a very multilayered and complex novel. I believe Fitzgerald is trying to cover some parts of society. Why is he ambiguous? Remember, this novel was published in 1925 when people were imprisoned for homosexuality, beaten and killed.
