York English Literature is an international, international and highly specialized field. We are different and encourage you to master the world's literature and writing. While acquiring a degree you can receive literature from Africa, Australia / New Zealand, Europe, South America, South East Asia, the United States and other areas. We believe that cross-border reading reflects the reality of literary history. Authors and literature always influence the boundaries of the borders and languages.
Through language, translation, and cultural differences, you will acquire important skills of language analysis and description. We also know that foreign language skills are increasingly highly appreciated by employers in different fields.
As part of our commitment to the global curriculum, you will participate in the first year of "Literary World I: Translation of Classics and Culture" and "Literature World II: Empire and Its Consequences".
In the second year as well, we will continue this world-wide literary research trajectory by selecting a series of exciting world literature modules to be held from spring to summer. Some are taught in the original language and some are taught in translation; others are fully translated. The choice is yours, you will be influenced by experiences of mastering a foreign language before entering university and mastering foreign languages in York.
Note: "Literary world I: translation of classics and culture" and "literary world II: Empire and its consequences" are two of the seven first year courses taken by a single department student. Besides, there are "Literary Method I: Modern Reading", "Literary Method II: Other World", "Key Concept", and two theme modules.
The world literary program is designed to bring students into literary, cultural, or academic interests. Courses and reading are in English, but students with foreign language skills are encouraged to read the original text. The course is taught by members of foreign languages, literature and Spanish language departments. The material can be obtained from various literature such as Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Spanish.
Literature is an indivisible part of the language and language enriches literary works. Considering literature as an important cultural property, literary works should be used as an effective tool for foreign language education, including English, which is the most commonly used language.
