Internationally, Ovechkin has participated in several competitions on behalf of Russia. His first IIHF tournament was the 2002 World U18 Championship. The following year he made a debut at the World Junior Championship to help Russia win the gold medal. He played for two years at the world youth team and again joined the world U18 championship.
