19th Century Short Stories

Charlotte Perkins - Gilman's 19th century short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" and Thomas Hardy's "The Nightingale and the Rose" are two stories in the 19th century. The two authors aim to sympathize for difficult characters. Several ways to generate sympathy are human circumstances, or specific problems experienced by the character. The first point to be discussed is the difficult situation that characters experience. In the nightingale and rose, the nightingale must sacrifice himself to aid the students.

In order to start the analysis, I chose a key phrase from Nathaniel Hawthorne's 19th century short story "The Birthmark". In "The Mark", the hero's alemer is obsessed with his wife's imperfection, her cheek mark. The whole short story has many symbolic representations of social norms and standards of beauty in this era. At the beginning of the story, Elmer clearly shows that his wife's cheek mark is her complete and beautiful destruction.
