19.8 Contracting with the Small Business Administration (The 8(a) Program)

The 8 (a) business development program of Small and Medium Enterprise Administration Bureau will help minority companies acquire public sector contracts. In order to comply with the Small Business Law, certain government agencies need to sign a federal contract with eight participants. In some cases, 8 (a) participating companies can be awarded a contract without competition. Who is eligible: Small and medium enterprises that are "socially and economically disadvantaged" owned and managed by American citizens. A socially disadvantaged group refers to an individual suffering from racial or ethnic prejudice, including but not limited to black, Hispanic, Native American, Asia Pacific and the Asian sub-continent.

SBA 8 (a) Business development plan: For small and medium enterprises interested in government contracts, obtaining 8 (a) certification will help them improve their chances of winning bids. To qualify, your company must be dominated by 51% of "socially and economically disadvantaged individuals" including women, minorities, and veterans.
