16th Century Artist: Caterina van Hemessen

Caterina van Hemessen is the daughter of the famous Flemish painter Jan Sanders van Hemessen. Women in the Renaissance era were facing obstacles in art (and society as a whole), but Van Hemson succeeded in his career and became a portrait painter for himself. She created many widely respected works, but she is best known for being one of the few women who successfully made artistic careers in the 16th century.
