100 Years of Loss

For more than a century from the mid-19th century to the mid-1990s, Canadian indigenous children were taken away from their homes and communities and placed in an institution called a boarding school. These schools are operated by religious organizations in cooperation with the federal government and children aged 4 or 5 pass. The impact of sexual, mental and physical abuse, humiliation and deprivation received by boarding schools in India continues to influence the survivors of today's generations, their families and the community. It is noteworthy that many survivors and their descendants continue to work hard to maintain language and culture and to achieve rehabilitation and reconciliation, even in the face of this terrible adversity.
