“Growing up in Athens” Book Launch Nov. 25th!

Please join us to celebrate the growth of Athens from 3 to 5 pm on November 25th. We will sell books and you will be here so that you can sign your book while enjoying the chosen reading and snacks. This event is generally held free of charge and will be held at South East Ohio History Center on 24 W State Street in Athens, Ohio.

Mail order will be issued after 25th. The book will be on sale at the Museum Store in Southeast Ohio History Center from November 24, 2017.

Grown up in Athens: The Memories collection is a luxurious limited edition 5 x 11 full color 350 page coffee table book issued by Orange Frazer Press of Wilmington, Ohio.

This book is a culmination of 2 years of work at the Athens Growth Council and gathered stories, poems, pictures, music and so on! The story of the inhabitants of the Athens area will entertain, stimulate and impress the hearts of all people who call this community home! It is full of unique pictures and memories of people who grew up in Athens from the 1920s to the 21st century.

Print a limited number. It does not reprint. If you pick up at the South Eastern Ohio History Center, the book is $ 50 (tax included). All sales will benefit the southeast Ohio historical district

We did not know for the first time when this project of Athens Growth Council met for the first time, if we could even make this book a reality, it would be so popular. At the Thanksgiving week we started to write 1,100 books, but as of today, about 60 books are left. We listen to places, times, and plenty of story from wonderful people about people that make our community very special. Our committee thanks all the people who supported this project, trusted us, booked books, and all the generous donors who helped publish.

Athens officially became a town in December 1806, the government consisted of three committees. The university and town continue to develop, and the cotton factory is a driving force for industrial development and commercial development. After the British city known for having a factory, Athens is known as "South Manchester". In 1833, a group of Athenian businessmen led by James Carmack, tired of their carriages, fell into the mud and connected with Athens in 1841 in Georgia Georgia, built the first railroad connected in 1845. Martha'sville (now Atlanta). In the 1930s and 1840s, due to the development of transportation and the increasing influence of the University of Georgia, Athens became one of the most important cities in the state. The prewar era was approaching the peak of its development. The university basically caused a chain reaction to the growth of the community that developed at its entrance.
